Duthie Hill Report

On Wednesday night BBTC.org held a reception out at the new Duthie Hill
mountain bike park location….

Duthie_05.jpgThe reception was conducted by Justin Vanderpool and the new BBTC Director John Lang. King County, Various Local Bike Shops and many concerned riders were in attendance for this first look at the what will be King County’s Newiest Bike Park. Building on the ongoing success of The Colonnade, BBTC and King County have begun the work on this 120 acre park off the Issaquah-Fall City Road. King County has given a total of $150,000 in grants and further funding is being sought to complete work on this park that is scheduled to open December of 09.

The park is in the early stages of development. Currently there isn’t good access to the area. There are also some major paperwork hurdles that need to be crossed before building can officially begin. The permitting guidelines have recently changed, so they need to be understood and complied with before the actual plan can be finalized. The talk around the field on Wednesday projected that building would start in earnest this fall. Just in time for the good building season. So, be prepared to put in some volunteer hours this fall and winter. Keep in mind that this schedule could accelerate at anytime.

When Phase 1 is complete there will be a xc course that is at lest a 4 mile loop, several Northshore-Style freeride lines, flowlines with jumps, and a mini-DH. The area will also be developed to handle events. As far as, a pump track and a dual-slalom course, they were talked about, and will probably happen, but a lot depends on budget and time. Learn more.

This is great news for Seattle area riders and another sign that BBTC.org is working to get us legit ride spots. Next we need a full on DH race course, World Cup Style. See you all out riding.

Thanks for the update - I had to work until 8pm that day so I obviously didn't get to see much. I'm looking forward to seeing this area first-hand. And, yes, we need a legit dh trail that could be shuttled or have lift-access. Please-please-please-please-please?????

For work parties keep an eye out on bbtc website, I know the next 3 months they will be trying to finish colonnade, after that Mike W. (the man in charge at colonnade), and bbtc will turn thier attention to Duthie hill. Duthie is about 3-4x the size of colonnade, and about 1/2 that will be for jump/flow/stunt/dh. It only has about twice as much vert as well, but the plain is to fit as much into that space a possable. Good news is we will be working with real dirt, not moon dust and bum piss. I look at these projects as a steping stone to getting a spot on a real mountain for legit dh/freeride. Not sure how a feel about shuttle as fair a trail mantaince goes, but if everyone pitched in it could work. Lift access, once ski resorts realize they can make money in the summer its on, stevens pass 09 baby.
