Olympic Dirt Society sponsored a shuttle day at Dry Hill in Port Angeles on March 8th and 9th. Riders in the PNW have come love these events put on by ODS and think of them as our little Whistler. I hear that over 180 riders registered for this last event. The lines were long, but the trucks kept hauling us up the hill and we never waited longer than one needed for a breather.
For many of the riders, the weekend began with trail work on Saturday. I arrived around noon with my buddies and we were immediately put to work upgrading One Liner. There were other work parties, as well. The orange clad crew of Dirt Corps was busy pimping out the Dual Slalom course. Other’s were scattered through out working on problem areas, or getting the race courses ready. It’s tough to work in the dirt when you hear the shuttle trucks arriving for the next day. But, it’s working the trail where we learn to love the dirt. Eventually, we all got in about four runs before dark. ,
Sunday was amazing. The dirt perfect, weather dry, but not hot. Everyone seemed so fast and happy. The most amazing part of it all for me was the camaraderie. It was a family reunion after season of not being together. Grom and Pro, Ladies and Guys all sharing stories and comparing notes. Riders were checking out those who were lucky enough to have new bikes and gear. “How do you like that M6?” “Is that an ‘08 fork, or last years?” It’s truly a special community.
It was great to see new faces out there. The local gravity community continues to grow and people continue to get better. The next event at Dry Hill is the April 4th-6th Fluidride Cup DH and DS.
Special thanks to Casey, Scott, Shawn, Summer, Josh, and the crew of ODS for creating a wonderful ride spot and putting on truly amazing events. If you haven’t ridden there during one of the shuttle days, you just got to. The shuttle days are all about the vertical that you can get in one day.
